NILES (October 3, 2010) – Governor Pat Quinn met with members of Illinois’ ethnic press today in a town-hall style setting to discuss issues of importance to both them and their readership. The Governor called the summit to reach out to ethnic media organizations, which often do not have the resources to cover the campaign full-time.
The Governor led and participated in an engaging dialogue, taking questions from the journalists in attendance and listening to their thoughts and concerns. He also highlighted his efforts to reach out to the state’s ethnic communities, and reaffirmed his commitment to diversity and to ensuring that all have an equal voice in Illinois government.
“We are fortunate to live in such a diverse state,” said Governor Quinn. “Ethnic media protect cultural traditions, while also educating new Illinois residents about their choices and responsibilities in Illinois government. It’s an essential role, and why I wanted to call this meeting and make sure they have the tools they need.”
The Governor emphasized the need to ensure proper funding for Illinois’ schools to secure a promising future for all state residents, especially the state’s thriving immigrant population. A former community college teacher, the Governor pointed to the importance of funding for community colleges, which provide students with the fundamental tools needed for success.
Governor Quinn encouraged further dialogue between his administration and Illinois' ethnic press.
