There isnt much that comes between Governor Pat Quinn and his longtime barber, Herb Brown. For more than 30 years, Pat Quinn and his barber have been talking about sports, family matters, and life in Illinois.
Like Herb, Governor Quinn knows that the state of Illinois is in a crisis right now, and a plan to give the state budget a quick trim and then make an appointment to find new revenues a few years down the road would be shear madness.
In his many years as a small-business owner, Herb has heard plenty of hair-brained schemes from politicians who dont respect voters enough to tell them the truth. He knows that Governor Quinn is doing everything he can to shave state spending while still preserving services that help people who are truly in need.
And no one knows better than Herb the Barber that growth is the key to healthy businesses, job creation, and a strong state economy.
Although Herb usually leans toward the Republican side of the aisle, he says hes planning to give the GOP the brush-off next November and vote for Governor Quinn.
I try and vote for the person who I believe is going to do the right job, Herb says. I believe in Pat Quinn because I knew him as a man before he was governor and I believe in his honesty.
Herb offers some advice to at least one Republican contender whos trying to persuade voters that thick, carefully styled hair is a tell-tale sign of a politician who has healthier things going on above his scalp than beneath it.
I just saw a commercial the other day, he said. If you can only be corrupt if you have a lot of hair, then Pats got it made.
