Yesterday, Governor Quinn reinforced his dedication to reform and his support for working families by selecting Sheila Simon as the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor. Today, the State Central Committee followed his lead, and chose Simon to join the 2010 Democratic ticket.
As an experienced and dedicated public servant, Simon served as one of the leaders of the Illinois Reform Commission. She helped pass major reforms to enhance government transparency, such as contract procurement and campaign finance reform.
In addition, Simon’s experience as a prosecutor, law professor and the mother of two daughters inspires her everyday to champion women’s issues and ensure that government helps to strengthen the fabric of our communities.
By looking downstate for a running mate, Governor Quinn demonstrated his commitment to surround himself with leaders that understand all parts of Illinois.
Sheila Simon is the product of a family with a long tradition of public service. Her father, Paul, was a long-serving U.S. Senator from Illinois, respected by members on both sides of the aisle for his integrity. Her mother, Jeanne, was a State Representative. Sheila has followed in her parents’ footsteps by devoting her energies to advancing the public interest.
While not a career politician, she is well-versed in politics and helped campaign for Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential run. In addition, Simon’s service on the Carbondale City Council provided her with firsthand knowledge of the issues that Illinois families are facing during this recession.
