Urbana, Illinois
Those who support the University of Illinois and realize its local and international importance should vote Pat Quinn Governor of Illinois.
Quinn is the only candidate with the courage to support a realistic tax system.
Dan Hynes attacks Quinn for supporting an increase in Illinois' flat rate income tax.
Hynes touts instead a constitutional amendment for a graduated income tax requiring a 3/5 vote in each the Illinois House and Senate and then by the public. That's not likely.
The News-Gazette praises Republican proposals for slashing the state budget.
Have readers calculated the impact on this community of starving education at all levels?
Do we want this country to fall behind the rest of the world?
In 1867, the people of Urbana and Champaign spent $40,000 to fund a brilliant campaign to get the state's land grant university located here. It was a very wise investment of local tax dollars.
Quinn is a man who understands the wise investment of state tax dollars.
In one year, Quinn broke a decade-long stalemate by getting a capital bill passed for much needed roads, bridges and high-speed rail. Without his leadership, Illinois would have forfeited billions of dollars in federal grants. His opponents may nit-pick, but they could not have solved all this state's problems in one year, either. They have neither Quinn's solid history of honesty and standing up for the public nor his vision for the future.
Pat Quinn deserves your vote in the Democratic Primary Feb. 2.
