Praise for Governor Quinn's Plans to Save Pension and Medicaid Systems

On April 18th, Governor Quinn proposed his bold plan to save the Medicaid system from a $2.7 billion funding gap, following the review and recommendations of a bi-partisan group of legislators. On April 19th, he announced his plan to strengthen and stabilize the state's pension systems, which will return them to 100% funding by 2042.

Both of these plans received strong endorsements from both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times editorial boards. Governor Quinn Delivers State of the State Address

After a year of progress, it's easy to see how Illinois is moving forward:

Lead the Midwest in economic growth. Created over 52,000 jobs. Established new tax credits for working families, small business, and entrepreneurs. Abolished the death penalty. Legalized Civil Unions for same-sex couples. Passed the Illinois DREAM Act.

This is just a small slice of what we have accomplished in the past year under Governor Quinn's leadership. In his State of the State Address, the Governor enumerated the many reasons Illinoisans have to be proud of their state, and laid out his plans for tackling many of the state's most challenging problems.

As Governor, Pat Quinn has passed sweeping ethics reforms, the first jobs bill in 10 years, and cut $3 billion - more than any governor in Illinois history - while protecting funding for our schools, hospitals, and first responders.

Governor Quinn: A Tireless Defender of Women’s Rights

Governor Pat Quinn has a long history of advocating for women—on health and economic issues that affect not only Illinois women but their families as well. He firmly supports equal pay for equal work, the right to choose, and family and medical leave to support working families.

Since becoming Governor, Pat Quinn has appointed well-qualified, thoughtful agency directors to ensure the vigorous support of women’s issues at all levels of state government.

Tax Relief for Working Families

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) was enacted by Congress in 1975 to provide tax relief to working families. Illinois enacted a state version in 2000. In January, Governor Quinn signed a bill to put more money in the pockets of working families by doubling Illinois EITC from 5 percent of the federal credit to 10 percent, saving low-income workers an extra $105 million a year. As the largest improvement of Illinois' EITC since it's inception, this tax relief will save more than 900,000 families an extra $100 to $200 per year.

Honor our mothers by saving our state

This Mother's Day, Illinois is at a crossroads. As we honor the mothers who gave us life, all of us confront a fundamental decision.

For the past 35 years, Illinois governors and the General Assembly chose to delay and skip tough decisions on restructuring our Medicaid and reforming the public pension system. Perhaps they didn't think anyone would get hurt. But it's precisely their refusal to address these problems that is hurting the 13 million people of Illinois today.

Like the mothers among us who take good care of their kids every day, we must assume responsibility to build a better future for all Illinois children. Our elected leaders must take the example of our mothers to heart!
