Fearing Conservative Social Policies, Womens' Groups Start Offensive Against Brady


If state Sen. Bill Brady's race against Gov. Pat Quinn comes anywhere as close as his campaign against Kirk Dillard, then one thing is for sure: It won't be womens' groups that push him over the edge.


Nearly eight months before the general election, advocates for abortion rights and equal-pay legislation have formally begun denouncing Brady, the Republican nominee for governor.


In a press conference this morning, leaders from several progressive organizations in the state portrayed Brady as a religiously motivated and extremely socially conservative candidate, unfit to serve women who want control over their reproductive and financial health.

Gov. Quinn Announces Nearly 1500 Jobs Coming to Chicago for Rail Project

Gov. Pat Quinn, Rep. Jim Oberstar (D-MN) and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) announced plans Friday for a federally funded, $133 million project to build a rail flyover in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood that will “significantly reduce rail congestion” and create nearly 1,500 jobs in Illinois.

Illinois One of 16 'Race to the Top' School Funding Finalists


Suburban school districts got reason to hope for funding relief Thursday, but not much else.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that 16 states, including Illinois, have been selected as finalists in the federal Race to the Top education competition for stimulus money.

Cemetery Safeguards to Take Effect This Week


Five weeks after Gov. Pat Quinn signed the Cemetery Oversight Act into law, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) announced Sunday that a group of cemetery professionals and community activists to serve on the state’s first-ever Cemetery Oversight Board.

A number of the safeguards signed into law by Gov. Quinn take effect on Monday, including protection from deceptive and unfair practices by the cemetery, according to a release from the IDFPR.
