Governor Quinn is committed to protecting the right to hunt and fish.  In these tough economic times, it's important to recognize that hunting and fishing provide $2.1 billion in economic activity in our state.  Wildlife watching is responsible for another $1.1 billion. These sources of revenue and jobs should be encouraged.

Tradition and community play a large role in hunting and fishing.  These activities provide a valuable bonding experience amongst families and friends, and the Governor recognizes the importance of maintaining these strong traditions.

Governor Quinn appointed two natural resources professionals to run the Illinois Department of Natural Resources; he was the first governor to do so.

Governor Quinn was responsible for the reopening of seven state parks less than a month after he was sworn in, providing families across the region access to the State's various outdoor recreational facilities.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service limits each state to three hunting zones.  Given the length of the state from north to south, the Governor has requested that Illinois be allowed to create a fourth zone.  This would allow the IDNR to better tailor hunting seasons for the various climates in Illinois, providing sportsmen with the best hunting opportunities.  Preliminary results of the 2009 Waterfowl Hunter Survey showed that 66 percent of South Zone hunters favored a later season start date.
